644 words; about a 3 minute read
Mission:
Preamble
Location: USS San Jose
Except New Bajor.
Operation Lantern had apparently been a wild success. With the first phase done it was time to ramp the recolonization effort into full swing. Starfleet and the Federation had placed a great emphasis on making sure the colony was a shining example of the new Peace and Prosperity they would bring to the Gamma quadrant.
Starting with New Bajor.
Which of course meant plucking Korra from her supposedly settled life on Bajor, taking her a way from her children, all for what ultimately amounted to a glorified political stunt...
Maybe that’s a bit harsh?
Korra rubbed a hand through dark hair, staring down at the blinking recording of her log entry. It wasn’t just a political stunt, she knew that. This mission, this colony, was truly a symbol and not just to the Gamma Quadrant. The original colony, the bright shining example of Bajor’s progress, of their triumph over the Cardassians, their stubborn defiance of a Universe that had been intent on wiping out her people. She was proud. Proud of her people for persevering, proud of the Federation for doing their part, and proud, so so so proud to be doing her part too.
And yet, staring down at the Cargo hold below she was angry so very angry. Why did she, Rasahani Korra out of every Bajoran in Starfleet need to be the leading this particular mission. Why did she need to be the one to escort several members of the Vedek Assembly and their herd of Batos to be blessed in the temple and shepherded to New Bajor. Why did she!? Her rank, her history, her duty… all things she understood, but her children did not.
It was hard enough trying to reconnect with the two girls Jalah, fifteen going on twenty two, and Jiaan barely out of her primary schooling. They had already been through so much. Their parent’s mess of a marriage, the war, the divorce… that SHAM of a trial Wakkon had put them through. She had promised them that things would be better, that her assignment to Bajor would mean stability, a chance to be a family again… not a month in and she'd already been made a kosst damned liar.
At least all she had to do was get through this mission. Deliver the Batos, deliver the Vedeks and head back home. Then she’d have her pick of assignments, her and her children or so command said. But Korra knew what she wanted, she wanted to be home, she needed a rest, she needed…
=/\=”Commander Rasahani?”=/\=
Not a single moment’s peace…
“Go ahead.”
=/\=”Commander, the Batos, have gotten lose again, the Ranjen decided the creatures needed more room and opened the pens. They’re um… they’re all over the shuttle bay.”=/\=
“Phekkhing…” Korra cleared her throat. “I’ll be right there. Get Beta shift on it and rounding them up, it’s their turn to deal with the chaos. Rasahani out.” Cutting off the communique with a harder than necessary thump to the badge on her chest, Korra fell back on her couch with a groan. “Ranjens.” She grumbled, “so self important…” the gripes and grumbling continued as the Bajoran tugged on her boots, tied up her hair and trudged toward the hatch and down to the shuttle bay.
